| WHAT IS A DISCUSSION GROUP? |
The internet has created opportunities to share knowledge and experiences with more people than could have been imagined a few years ago. One of the greatest internet creations has been the Discussion Group. Many are hosted by yahoogroups.com and within this system there are thousands of privately run groups comprising people all over the world having similar interests. Some groups are very private or family based whilst others are made up of people who are interested in clocks, watches, barometers, motorcycles, astronomy, stamp-collecting and so on. Some groups have restricted membership whilst others are open to anyone. Indeed, whatever your interest there will be a group of people keen to welcome you and eager to share ideas with you.
HOW DO THEY WORK? |
Each group has its own special email address. When a member sends a message to that special address the email is delivered to every member of the group no matter if the membership is 10 persons or 5000. Members may reply either to the group as a whole, or simply to the person who originated the message. There is never any need to respond to messages and some people never do so but are content to read that written by other members. Most groups allow members to upload photographs and files if they want to share things with others. There is no restriction to the number of groups to which anyone might like to belong. There are no charges for these groups - all are free.
HOW TO JOIN? |
The
first step is to send an email to the group address. However Some
groups restrict automatic membership and you might be asked about your
interests or qualifications If you qualify to join a restricted group then you will be notified directly by the Owner or Moderator
